Bonpland Crater is located along the Eastern edge of Mare Cognitum, the sea that has become known, and is collocated with Parry Crater to its east. Bonpland crater has a diameter of approximately 37 miles (60 Km) and its rim is heavily eroded. Bonpland Crater was previous flooded with lava when the Moon was volcanically active some 3 to 4 billion years ago. The floor of Bonpland Crater is mostly flat with a series of broken narrow clefts.

Bonpland Crater is named after Aimé Jacques Alexandre Bonpland, a French explorer and botanist who lived between 1773 and 1858. Bonpland served as a surgeon in the French army before traveling to Mexico, Colombia and areas bordering the Orinoco and Amazon rivers in South America. While traveling on these expeditions, Aimé Bonpland collected and classified approximately 6000 plants unknown to Europeans at the time.

Bonpland Crater is attached to the Fra Mauro walled lunar plain, which lies to the North and was the landing site of Apollo 14, with the crew of Alan Shepard, Stuart Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell. Apollo 14 was launched January 31, 1971, and their Lunar Module, Antares, landed on the Moon in the Fra Mauro highlands, located approximately 30 miles north of the Fra Mauro Crater, February 5, 1971. Two Apollo 14 Astronauts remained on the lunar surface for 33.5 hours and made 2 Extravehicular Activities (EVA’s) totaling 9 hours and 25 minutes.
