Lake of Joy Location Description

Lacus Gaudii, Latin for the Lake of Joy, is a small lunar lake approximately 113 km (70 miles) in diameter, located in the central region of the near side Moon, in an area known as Terra Nivium (Land of Snows). The Sea of Serenity (Mare Serenitatis) is located to the north, with Montes Haemus in between and the Sea of Vapors (Mare Vaporum) located to the southwest of this lake. Like lunar Mare, from the Latin word Maria which means Seas, lunar lakes were created by ancient lava flows and derived their names because they resembled lakes here on Earth. These types of formations appear as dark areas on the lunar surface when viewed from Earth and ancient historians believed these darker areas were actually liquid oceans, bays and lakes, hence the Latin names which reference these features as bodies of water. The volcanic activity that flooded this lake with lava, as well as the Lunar Sea in Mare Serenitatis to its north, occurred between 3.2 to 3.8 billion years ago, while the Moon was undergoing a period of major volcanic activity.

Several noteworthy formations near the Lake of Joy are Lacus Doloris (the Lake of Sorrow) located to the west, Lacus Lenitatis (the Lake of Tenderness) located directly southwest, Lacus Hiemalis (the Lake of Winter) located directly southeast and Manilius Crater, a bright 40 Km (25 mile) wide crater with 2438 meter (8000 foot) walls, located to the south, just below the Lake of Tenderness.
